FARNHAM

Farnham is an historic market town, made so thanks to the ancient meeting of several roads and a number of small villages and hamlets surrounding it. Through the ages, Farnham has been an important town, being on the main route from London to Winchester and the coast, and is dominated to the north by the fine Norman castle built in 1138, which was the home of the Bishops of Winchester and then Guildford until 1956. The parish church of St. Andrew is about 600 years old and set amidst cobbled lanes in the centre of the town. In the churchyard, the tomb of William Cobbett can be seen. There are many fine Georgian buildings in the town especially in the well known Castle Street as well as more modern developments, particularly on the outskirts of the town. The surrounding villages include Tilford, Frensham, Rowledge, Crondall, The Sands and Churt. Shops range from the many fashionable restaurants, cafes and bars, more well-known High Street names, and many delightful individual shops selling a variety of things. Leisure abounds in the area for most tastes, together with music and art organisations, and countless other groups. There are many sporting clubs including cricket, rugby, tennis, and for those who enjoy water, sailing at Frensham Ponds. There are many delightful and well known golf courses in the area, set amidst the beautiful Surrey and Hampshire countryside. A beautiful area to enjoy walking, horse riding and cycling. The area has many well respected schools, both in the private and public sectors, catering for most ages and denominations, whilst the main line station offers prompt services to Waterloo in under an hour. Good road access to the A3, M3, and A331.
